With Ultramid® H, BASF presents a true world first for food processing: the first thermoplastic polyamide with high water permeability. This innovation combines two properties that were previously considered incompatible – high mechanical strength together with water and smoke permeability – thereby opening up entirely new possibilities for artificial casings and functional food packaging.

At the heart of this breakthrough is a pioneering application: for the first time, smoked and subsequently dried sausages can be produced in an artificial casing made entirely of polyamide. Ultramid® H allows smoke aromas to pass through during smoking and enables the controlled release of water during drying, directly through the casing. The result is more efficient processes, consistently high product quality, and new product concepts.

Thanks to its high strength, Ultramid® H also enables the production of particularly thin-walled artificial casings. This reduces material consumption while simultaneously creating room for innovative designs.
