Trendsetting solution: Siemens & BASF present circuit breaker with components made from BMB plastics

Siemens Smart Infrastructure and BASF are taking an important step towards a circular economy. With the SIRIUS 3RV2 circuit breaker, the companies have introduced the first electrical safety product to contain components made from biomass-balanced plastics.

In the production of the circuit-breaker, fossil raw materials are replaced by bio-methane from agricultural waste. For this purpose, BASF's plastics Ultramid® BMBcertTM and Ultradur® BMBcertTM are used. They offer identical quality and performance as conventional plastics.

BASF's biomass balance approach contributes to the use of renewable raw materials in its integrated production system and can be applied to most products in the portfolio. In this approach, renewable resources are used as feedstocks at the beginning of the production network and allocated to the respective sales products through a third-party verified certification process. The certified products thus contribute to sustainable development by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and conserving fossil resources.
