Post-consumer recycled materials for the automotive industry

WIS Kunststoffe, based in Breitungen, Thuringia, is expanding its portfolio to include PCR-based recycled materials approved for use in the automotive sector. This enables the company to help processors meet mandated recycled content requirements while simultaneously reducing the carbon footprint of their plastic products.
WIS Kunststoffe has been engaged in professional plastic recycling for over 25 years and has increasingly specialized in high-quality applications. “The CO₂ footprint can be reduced particularly efficiently through the use of post-consumer recycled materials (PCR),” explains authorized signatory Daniel Römhild. In addition, WIS offers its customers CO₂ calculations that clearly demonstrate the savings achieved by using recycled materials instead of virgin resin.
Processing post-consumer materials is a demanding task, as waste from yellow bags or other material streams must first be meticulously sorted and washed. Only then can it be processed into high-quality recompounds. Ensuring consistently high material quality poses a particular challenge in this process.
In recent years, WIS has made extensive investments in its machinery and in-house analytical laboratory. As a result, the company is now able to manufacture PCR-based recompounds with guaranteed properties for the automotive industry. The energy required for this is generated entirely by the company’s recently installed in-house photovoltaic system.
In developing the new product line, WIS drew on its many years of expertise in high-quality applications, including in the cosmetics, household, gardening, and technical products sectors. With these new materials, converters can not only meet the regulatory requirements for recycled content but also rely on consistent material quality and compliance with agreed-upon specifications.
