Increasing PFAS restrictions and growing demand for recycled-content materials are creating new expectations for flame-retardant plastics. Manufacturers are seeking solutions that maintain performance and reliability while meeting evolving regulatory requirements.

To address these needs, LG Chem has developed a Next-Generation Flame-Retardant Technology Platform combining No Intentionally Added (NIA) PFAS flame-retardant technology with high-purity post-consumer recycled (PCR) sourcing expertise and material solutions. The platform provides flame-retardant materials with recycled content across various applications.

Conventional flame-retardant materials often rely on fluorinated additives for flame-retardant and anti-dripping performance, while recycled-content materials may face challenges related to consistency and property retention. Through proprietary technology, LG Chem has achieved flame-retardant performance without intentionally adding PFAS substances and established a high-purity PCR sourcing and quality management system to maintain performance comparable to virgin-material grades.

A representative example is LUPOY ER5001PN, containing 60% PCR content and achieving UL94 V-0 flame retardancy at 1.5 mm. The material has obtained UL746B Relative Thermal Index (RTI) certification and UL746G PFAS-Free certification. According to LG Chem's Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), it showed approximately 47% lower carbon emissions than an equivalent virgin PC/ABS material.

The platform can be applied across PC and PC/ABS materials, transparent and opaque applications, and multiple flame-retardant performance levels, enabling solutions tailored to customer requirements.

By combining NIA flame-retardant technology with high-purity PCR sourcing expertise, LG Chem provides additional options for addressing evolving regulatory, recycled-content, and performance requirements.
